Govert Racing is in the race for the ASA Rookie of the Year

10TH ANNUAL ELMER MUSGRAVE MEMORIAL THIS SATURDAY AT ILLIANA MOTOR SPEEDWAY By Kari Shear-Carlson

June 13, 2011 - Where can you see the 2010 ASAMT champion, a 2010 Chicagoland area track champion, and the 2011 ASAMT point leader and speed51.com #1 draft pick go head-to-head? Only at Illiana Motor Speedway in Schererville, IN on Saturday, June 18th.

Jeff Cannon is running for the 2011 ASA Midwest Tour Rookie of the Year. He is also the 2010 Illiana Motor Speedway track champion. This Saturday, June 18th, the American Speed Association® Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power Equipment and GrandStay Hospitality returns to Illiana for the “10th Annual Elmer Musgrave Memorial” presented by Texas Corral.

Jeff Cannon moved up the ranks as many drivers do. At age 11, he started racing go-karts, moved into Legends Cars then into the sportsman level. In 2005, Cannon made the move to late model racing at Illiana Motor Speedway. In his very first year, he finished second in the point standings.

In 2006 Jeff started racing for Wayne Govert and has never looked back. Together, the team as has won three track championships and accumulated many victories. In both 2009 and 2010, Cannon finished fourth when the ASAMT came to his home track in Schererville, IN. But he does not feel that it gives him much of an advantage.

“It doesn’t really help me too much when it comes to the ASAMT. I guess just knowing the track has it’s advantages, but the drivers and cars are so good in the Tour, they all pick it up in no time,” said Cannon.

So what does the 2010 track champion and 2011 ASAMT rookie contender think it will take to win the 10th Annual Elmer Musgrave Memorial? “I believe it is going to take not only a fast car, but a consistent car to win. Illiana can be a hard place to hold on for the long run,” said Cannon.

The driver of the Govert Auto Body sponsored Chevy Impala knows that no matter how many championships or victories a driver has at a local track, running with the ASAMT changes everything. Like most drivers, Cannon is hoping to have a solid run. “Honestly, anytime we run good against drivers in the ASAMT it feels like a victory.”

Cannon thanks Wayne and Judy Govert for all that they do and supply; as well as his crew. He also extends a special thanks to his wife. “She takes care of most everything since I’m not around all that much.”

“Thanks to the ASAMT staff and all of the sponsors for putting on a terrific show race after race,” added Cannon.

Qualifying for the “10th Annual Elmer Musgrave Memorial” presented by Texas Corral starts at 5:00PM with an autograph session at 6:00PM with racing at 7:00PM. For more information on the event log on to asamidwesttour.com.
